What To Expect

Therapy can be intimidating, even if you’ve done it before. I will do my best to help you feel as comfortable as possible, and part of this is by making sure you stay in the driver’s seat. You hit the gas when you want to, and more importantly you can hit that brake pedal when you need to. You can always expect to be respected, listened to, supported, and cared for during your sessions with me- I will hold space for you.

I use a trauma-informed, strengths-based approach. I see every person as an individual with their own experiences that have shaped them throughout their lifespan. Sometimes there are wounds (trauma, but also can be an unmet need, etc.) that we have experienced in our lives that cause us to react to certain situations in an unhelpful way. This can impede our ability to cope with life stressors. Oftentimes it is beneficial to take a look into how we can heal those wounds so that we can keep moving forward and experience life in full color. As an outside observer, I may stop and point these out if I notice them, but you are in control and can decide when/if to delve into these topics. In other situations, we will need to look at the ‘right here, right now’ and address those topics before we can even begin to look at the past.

If we are doing trauma work, we will first make sure you are equipped with strategies to calm yourself long before we begin discussing difficult topics. These can be short meditative-type activities, relaxation techniques, breath work, or grounding exercises- just to name a few.

In other words, I do not follow a therapy template. I work with you to develop a plan that suits you as an individual in order to achieve your wellness goals. Sometimes this means meeting weekly in the beginning to really get the ball rolling, sometimes this means meeting once per month just as maintenance- we will go with what you need.
